Major League Soccer 2024 Playoffs: Upset Galore as Atlanta United Advances
The 2024 Major League Soccer (MLS) playoffs are unfolding with unexpected turns, as some of the league’s giants have already been toppled in the early rounds. The defending champion, who remains unnamed, has been eliminated along with a consistently formidable side from the competition earlier than anticipated. Among the surprises, Inter Miami, a team known for its lineup of star players, was sent packing by Atlanta United, which now marches into the Eastern Conference semifinals against Orlando City.
Atlanta’s veteran goalkeeper, Brad Guzan, has played a pivotal role in his team’s postseason success. «It feels that much better when you’re training with a real purpose,» Guzan told ESPN, expressing his enthusiasm at the prospect of competing for another MLS Cup. The 40-year-old goalkeeper has been crucial in Atlanta’s advancements, particularly noted for his impressive performance in their comeback during the playoff series against Inter Miami.
The playoff format, revamped for 2024, began with a single-elimination wild card round followed by a best-of-three series in Round One. Teams are set to compete in single-game conference semifinals and finals, with the eventual MLS Cup match hosted by the team holding the better regular-season record.
In the Western Conference, the progression has largely aligned with expectations. The top two seeds have moved forward to the conference semifinals, maintaining control of the competition thus far.
Interim manager Rob Valentino has steered Atlanta United through a season that showed signs of crumbling. Despite challenges, the team managed to gather momentum, finishing strong with a critical win over Orlando City and securing the playoff position. Now, they find themselves three wins away from the ultimate prize.
As the lowest seed still competing, Atlanta United faces an uphill battle against formidable competitors. Yet, Brad Guzan and his teammates convey an internal confidence that has grown with each victory. «It wasn’t me fostering [confidence], it was us fostering it together,» Valentino stated, indicating a collective belief within the squad.
All playoff games, including the MLS Cup, will be available for streaming on official platforms. Select games will be broadcast on Fox and FS1, with additional streaming options available.
