A watermain break in northwest Calgary has led to a critical state in the city’s water supply, prompting an Alberta Emergency Alert warning. The incident occurred along 16th Avenue N.W., impacting numerous homes in the Bowness and Montgomery areas.

The alert, issued by CBC News, urged residents to conserve water and avoid non-essential usage like showering and dishwashing. Sue Henry, head of Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA), described the situation as critical during a press conference at the Emergency Operations Centre.

To combat the water shortage, a mandatory outdoor watering ban has been enforced. Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek clarified the distinction between outdoor restrictions and indoor water conservation, emphasizing that household activities like bathing are permissible.

The incident caused flooding in Bowness and Montgomery, resulting in road closures including sections of the Trans-Canada Highway. The affected areas also faced a boil water advisory issued by Alberta Health Services, with Nancy Mackay from the City of Calgary mentioning uncertainty regarding the duration of water restrictions.

In response, the city invoked its Municipal Emergency Plan and warned residents to boil water in Bowness before consumption. A timeline for repairs has not yet been provided by authorities.
