Malayalam Film Aattam Excels at National Awards
The Malayalam film ‘Aattam‘ has made quite a splash by being selected as the best feature film at the National Film Awards. Directed by Anand Ekarshi, the film has also bagged awards for screenplay and editing.
Ekarshi expressed his delight over the accolades, calling it a ‘huge fortune’ beyond expectations. He credited the film’s success to Vinay Fort, who encouraged him to bring the movie to life, and to producer Ajit Joy for having the confidence in the project.
Vinay Fort chimed in, saying that the credit should mostly go to Ekarshi and Joy. He highlighted the importance of recognizing theatre artists, noting that it’s rare for them to receive such acknowledgment.
The film originally got its censor board certification back in December 2022, but Ekarshi and Joy decided to hold off the release for a year. They thought it would be better to screen it at various film festivals first. Their gamble paid off, leading to several awards before its general release.
Although the initial box office response wasn’t massive, the film found its audience after releasing on digital platforms. Ekarshi noted that many viewers across the country appreciated it once it was available online.
The plot revolves around a serious topic—sexual harassment—where one of the actresses in a theatre group faces accusations against a film star. Ekarshi pointed out that this issue resonates with many women everywhere, making it a very relevant subject.
