Mamata Banerjee Visits Murdered Doctor’s Family
West Bengal’s Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, paid a visit to the grieving family of a post-graduate trainee doctor who was tragically found raped and murdered in a seminar hall at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata.
The visit took place around 12:45 PM, where she took the time to speak with the victim’s parents and relatives, sharing in their sorrow during this difficult time.
After meeting with the family, Mamata expressed her shock at how such a horrifying incident could occur in a hospital that had nurses and security personnel present. She highlighted that if the Kolkata Police does not make significant progress in the investigation by this Sunday, the case will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
“This is an extremely painful incident. Whoever is involved must be punished immediately,” Mamata stated. She emphasized the urgency for a fast-tracked case to ensure a quicker judicial process.
The young doctor’s body was discovered on Friday morning, and by the next day, authorities had arrested a civic volunteer linked to the crime. The situation has ignited protests, with some demanding a magisterial inquiry and going so far as to halt even emergency medical services.
In response to the protests, the state government has also canceled leave for senior doctors, who are now expected to handle the rising number of patients until normalcy is restored.
The strike by the protesting doctors has gained national support, with the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association of India (FORDA) calling for a suspension of elective services today, and they have informed the Union Health Ministry about their decision.
