Manatee Rescued in North Carolina, Treated at SeaWorld Orlando
A manatee weighing 855 pounds is currently receiving treatment at SeaWorld Orlando after being rescued in North Carolina. The female manatee was discovered by the Greenville Utilities Commission canal in the Tar River, North Carolina, and has suffered an injury thought to be caused by a watercraft impact. SeaWorld Orlando, in conjunction with several agencies, is providing care for the distressed marine mammal.
Officials from SeaWorld have reported that the manatee’s injuries are significant, impacting its right side. Due to these damages, it was essential to transport the animal to a facility where it can receive specialized care. SeaWorld also noted that there have been various sightings of this manatee over the past few weeks along the Pamlico and Tar rivers.
Multiple organizations collaborated in the rescue effort, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, North Carolina Aquariums, North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, and North Carolina State University.
One local resident, Sam Summerlin, played a vital role in the discovery of the manatee. According to WRAL News, Summerlin was informed by a neighbor about the manatee’s distress. He subsequently provided visual evidence, including photos and videos, which aided the rescue teams in locating the animal.
Monday’s rescue is not an isolated incident of manatee sightings in North Carolina, as such mammal appearances in this region have been occasionally reported. The collaboration between state and coastal agencies ensures the safeguarding and rehabilitation of endangered manatees that wander into unfamiliar territories.
