Manchester United Under-18s Secure Victory Against Liverpool
Manchester United‘s Under-18 team achieved a 2-0 victory over Liverpool in their first home game of the 2024/25 season. This match, played at Carrington, marked the team’s third consecutive win across all competitions, and they have now secured back-to-back 2-0 victories in the Under-18 Premier League North.
The match began with an energetic tempo as both sides demonstrated their intent to attack. Bendito Mantato, displaying a lively presence on the right flank, had a penalty appeal turned down after being challenged by Cam Williams. He managed to maneuver into the penalty area but unfortunately missed the target.
Liverpool also had opportunities, with Prince Cisse and Joe Bradshaw failing to capitalize on presentable chances, as they could not test goalkeeper Will Murdock. Murdock only had to make routine saves from long-distance strikes by Josh Sonni-Lambie and Schofield Lonmeni.
As the match progressed, Manchester United maintained the pressure. An effort from Gabriele Biancheri, following a cross from Zach Baumann, was parried by Liverpool’s goalkeeper Bailey Hall, who also saved a follow-up from Mantato, though the latter was offside.
United finally broke the deadlock just before halftime. James Scanlon linked up effectively with Godwill Kukonki, who supplied a low cross that Biancheri converted from close range. With Academy graduate Marcus Rashford observing from the sidelines, the young Reds continued to control the match as they entered the second half.
In the second period, Mantato missed a chance to extend the lead when he guided Fletcher’s center over the top of the goal. On the defensive end, Murdock had to adapt quickly to save a shot from Sonni-Lambie as Liverpool sought to respond.
The second goal for United came from a swift counter-attack as Scanlon sent a clipped ball forward to an advancing Tyler Fletcher, who calmly finished into the bottom corner. Mantato continued to look for additional goals but was denied again by Hall after receiving a cross from Biancheri.
United successfully maintained control of the match to secure their second consecutive league victory and a clean sheet. The young Reds will next compete on Saturday, September 14, against Newcastle United‘s Under-18 team, with the match scheduled for 12:30 BST.
