Marquette’s Kam Jones Earns Big East Player of the Week
The Marquette men’s basketball team is celebrating after Kam Jones was named the Big East Player of the Week on Monday morning. Jones has impressed with an average performance of 20 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists over the past week, as reported by Marquette Athletics.
Ranked No. 15, the Marquette Golden Eagles secured victories against their opponents in recent matches. Among the notable performances was Jones’s «28-point masterpiece» against Maryland, which fueled discussions about his potential as a national player of the year contender. «I think we all know Kam’s our guy on offense,» senior guard Stevie Mitchell commented on Jones’s influence on the team.
When Jones sat out due to foul trouble, Mitchell stepped up with a team-high 17 points against Central Michigan, including scoring nine points in a crucial part of the game. «When he goes out, the mindset changes. We all need to step up,» Mitchell explained the team’s shift in dynamics.
First-year player Royce Parham has also shown promise with an offensive spark, contributing offensively despite dealing with health setbacks during matches. Head Coach Shaka Smart spoke highly of Parham’s potential, saying, «He’s a phenomenal offensive player. It’s just a matter of him gaining a comfort level.»
The Golden Eagles are seeing contributions from several first-year players, including Caedin Hamilton and Damarius Owens, who made a brief yet promising debut after recovering from a toe injury. The team’s cohesion and depth have been critical in their performance this season.
Looking forward, Marquette will face No. 6 Purdue at Fiserv Forum, followed by a matchup against Georgia in the Bahamas. These games are anticipated to challenge the team’s capabilities further and provide opportunities for emerging players to make an impact.
