Maryland Football Faces Iowa in Crucial Home Finale
Maryland football is set to welcome Iowa to SECU Stadium for its final home game of the season, with kick-off scheduled for noon on Saturday and the game being broadcast on the Big Ten Network. The Terrapins, often referred to as the ‘Terps’, are striving to recover from a challenging defeat to Rutgers, where they fell 31-17. This defeat was particularly disheartening given that Maryland had dominated the Scarlet Knights in previous seasons, winning by an average of 26.3 points per game over the last three years.
Currently holding a record of 4-6, Maryland is in a critical position, requiring victories in their last two regular-season games to achieve a .500 record and become eligible for a bowl game. This need for victory places additional pressure on the Terps as they face a formidable opponent in Iowa.
Iowa’s head coach, Kirk Ferentz, is recognized as the longest-serving Division I FBS head coach, marking his 24th year with the program in 2024. Under his guidance, the Hawkeyes have achieved over 200 wins and secured 10 bowl victories. Despite entering the season as the 25th-ranked team nationally, Iowa has experienced fluctuating performances within the Big Ten, including significant victories over Minnesota and Northwestern, contrasted by losses to Michigan State and UCLA.
The Hawkeyes, coming off their second bye week of the season, should be refreshed and ready for the upcoming challenge against Maryland. Iowa boasts several standout players, including junior running back Kaleb Johnson, who leads the Big Ten in rushing yards, averaging 132.8 yards per game and 20 rushing touchdowns. Linebacker Jay Higgins and defensive lineman Aaron Graves are other key players, each bringing impressive statistics and performances throughout the season.
In terms of offensive strategies, Iowa’s strength lies in their rushing game, leading the Big Ten with 208.1 rushing yards per game. Their passing offense, however, has struggled, ranking near the bottom in passing yards and touchdowns within the conference.
For Maryland, quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. represents a pivotal aspect of the game. Initially demonstrating strong performance in the first half of the season, Edwards’ performance has waned in recent games. His ability to return to form may significantly influence Maryland’s chances against Iowa.
Meanwhile, Iowa’s quarterback lineup has seen changes with head coach Ferentz announcing that sophomore Jackson Stratton will start in the upcoming match. Stratton, who replaces injured Brendan Sullivan and Cade McNamara, has limited experience, with his recent outing against UCLA marking his season debut.
This matchup is critical for Maryland, as losing would end their hopes of reaching the elusive six-win mark needed for bowl eligibility.
