Massive Explosion in Whalan Leaves One Person Missing
A massive explosion rocked the residential area of Whalan in Sydney‘s west, leaving one person missing as emergency crews continue their search efforts. The incident occurred at a townhouse on Waikanda Crescent, causing significant destruction to the property.
Fire and Rescue NSW, led by Superintendent Ross Genders, are actively engaged in the search and rescue operation. The collapse of the two-storey building has prompted an intense search as crews work diligently to locate the missing individual.
In the aftermath of the explosion, five individuals were transported to medical facilities for minor injuries. Among them, a woman in her 60s and a wheelchair-bound woman in her 70s were taken to Blacktown Mt Druitt Hospital and the Hawkesbury District Health Service.
The explosion, which resulted in the collapse of the townhouse, also affected neighboring properties within the complex. Witness accounts describe a sudden bright light followed by a deafening boom, as windows shattered and ceilings caved in.
Residents like Leanne Ansell, residing near the impacted site, shared the harrowing experience of the blast’s aftermath. The destructive force of the explosion left debris scattered, with windows shattered and structural damage evident.
The ongoing rescue operation is prioritizing the search in the area where the most rubble has accumulated. Despite the challenging conditions, rescuers are using seismic monitoring equipment to detect any signs of life beneath the ruins.
While the exact cause of the explosion remains unknown, Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed that a gas leak initially hindered rescue efforts. However, the gas supply to the area has been secured, mitigating further risks.
With numerous Fire and Rescue units deployed to the scene, including specialized HAZMAT and drone teams, the emergency response has been swift and comprehensive. Public safety directives advise residents to steer clear of the area to facilitate ongoing operations.
