Rita Moreno Barbie Doll

Mattel has released a new Barbie doll honoring the legendary actress Rita Moreno, coinciding with her upcoming 93rd birthday. Part of the toy maker’s Barbie Tribute Collection, the doll celebrates Moreno’s significant contributions to the entertainment industry as the first Latina to achieve an Academy Award, among numerous accolades.

The doll is a tribute to Moreno’s groundbreaking career, which includes her historic win for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Anita in the 1961 musical «West Side Story» at the 34th Oscar ceremony in 1962. The Barbie doll’s attire is inspired by the gown Moreno wore on that landmark night. According to Mattel, extensive collaboration with Moreno ensured the doll accurately reflects her likeness.

“Rita Moreno has long been a star on stage and a heroine in real life. As the first Latina to win the venerated EGOT prize and a fiercely outspoken advocate for representation, her most important role to date is being the role model she never had,” reads a statement by Barbie’s official account on Instagram.

Moreno’s illustrious career is further highlighted by her EGOT status, including an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. Other accolades include a Golden Globe, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a Peabody Award for career achievement. Moreno’s influence extends beyond her artistic endeavors as she actively advocates for racial and gender equality.

Krista Berger, senior vice president of Barbie and global head of dolls at Mattel, stated, “She has shattered stereotypes and barriers for Latinas in the entertainment industry and beyond. Her fierce advocacy for the Latino community and her tireless commitment to pursuing her passions in the performing arts perfectly encapsulates Barbie’s mission to inspire the next generation.”

“I was a girl who decided to go for it, and despite the challenges I faced, I never gave up on my dreams,» Moreno said in a statement. «I hope this doll inspires each and every girl today: to live their life with courage and resilience so that they can make their dreams a reality.»

The Barbie Tribute Collection, initiated in 2021, focuses on honoring trailblazing women who have made substantial cultural impacts, with previous honorees including Lucille Ball and Laverne Cox. The Rita Moreno Barbie doll is available for purchase starting November 20, ahead of Moreno’s birthday on December 11.
