Mavericks Secure Victory Over Thunder Without Doncic
The Dallas Mavericks claimed a thrilling 121-119 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday night, playing without their star guard Luka Doncic. Stepping up in Doncic’s absence, P.J. Washington delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 27 points and grabbing a career-high 17 rebounds.
Despite averaging just over eight points and seven rebounds per game entering the matchup, Washington significantly contributed to the Mavericks’ efforts, as noted by the Associated Press. His performance helped Dallas maintain a competitive edge, showcasing his ability to lead with Doncic sidelined due to a bruised right knee.
The Mavericks’ offensive strategy proved effective as Kyrie Irving added 23 points, aiding the team to achieve a 48% shooting rate from the field. Meanwhile, the Thunder’s top scorer Shai Gilgeous-Alexander impressed with 36 points, while Jalen Williams contributed 27 points as the team attempted to protect their strong Western Conference record of 11-2.
At one point, the Thunder trailed by 14 points with just over six minutes left in the game but managed a comeback to close the gap to three points with only seconds to play. Gilgeous-Alexander forced a jump ball with eight seconds remaining, won it, and Oklahoma City took a timeout with 6.6 seconds left on the clock. However, the Thunder’s efforts were thwarted when Gilgeous-Alexander, after making the first free throw, missed the second, and Lu Dort‘s last-gasp three-pointer at the buzzer failed to connect.
One significant factor in Dallas’ success was their ability to capitalize on their size advantage, resulting in a dominant 53-29 rebounding margin over the smaller Thunder squad. Oklahoma City could generate additional shot opportunities through forcing turnovers; however, Dallas, orchestrated by Irving, limited turnovers to just 16, well below what Oklahoma typically causes.
The Mavericks showed determination and tactical acumen throughout the contest, making 30 of 36 free throws contrasted with the Thunder’s 19 of 25. The Thunder are adjusting play without Chet Holmgren, and despite their gallant late effort, the Mavericks managed to secure the win.
Both teams face quick turnarounds, with the Mavericks hosting the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday and the Thunder visiting the San Antonio Spurs on the same day.
