Max Christie Returns to Bench as Lakers Face Jazz
Max Christie, a key player for the Los Angeles Lakers, will return to his role on the bench for Tuesday’s game against the Utah Jazz, as reported by Dave McMenamin of ESPN. Following a spot start in the Lakers’ recent victory over the New Orleans Pelicans, Christie will revert to his familiar position as a substitute. With Cam Reddish sidelined due to a leg injury in the previous matchup, Christie had temporarily stepped into Reddish’s shoes.
The 21-year-old’s recent performances have seen him averaging 4.8 points and 1.6 rebounds over his last five games, during which he logs an average of 11.2 minutes per game. Despite the brief stint in the starting lineup, Christie has expressed that his time out of the usual rotation earlier in the season served as a constructive period for self-improvement.
«I think it was good for me, to be honest, those three games,» Christie remarked regarding his temporary removal from the rotation. He used the time to reflect on his performances and seek areas for enhancement. «It was kind of just like a reset for me. Me looking inward to see what I can do better,» Christie elaborated.
Los Angeles Lakers’ head coach, JJ Redick, has been supportive of Christie’s developmental process. Christie acknowledged Redick’s encouragement, noting, «He’s had a lot of conversations with me and continues to show his belief in me.» Redick’s faith in Christie’s capabilities has been a significant source of confidence for the young player, encouraging him to contribute however he can, whether through energy, defense, or other facets of the game.
Christie’s potential impact was evident during the closing moments of the game against New Orleans. With the Lakers maintaining a slim lead, Christie made a pivotal play by securing an offensive rebound, which ultimately helped ensure the Lakers’ victory. Reflecting on the play, Christie commented, «If they get the ball they’d have to dribble it up and heave it. So you can be absolutely aggressive, find a route to crash. The only thing is you don’t want to foul, I was able to get a tip without fouling to secure the game.»
As the Lakers await the return of injured players, Christie’s role may continue to evolve. The Lakers management and coaching staff hope he will increasingly prove to be a valuable asset off the bench as the season progresses.
