Memphis Grizzlies Rookie Zach Edey Gains Momentum Amidst Challenging Matchups
Zach Edey, the ninth overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, is becoming a notable presence in the Memphis Grizzlies lineup, demonstrating his capabilities in the NBA’s rookie landscape. Despite early-season questions surrounding his ability to transition from college to professional play due to his unique frame, Edey finds himself firmly in the race for Rookie of the Year.
Edey is currently averaging 11.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, and one block per game over roughly 20 minutes per contest. His shooting efficiency is drawing attention, with a remarkable 60% success rate from three-point range and a 61% field goal percentage, leading all rookies with a minimum of 100 attempts in the early part of the season.
«The biggest question was whether Edey’s unique size could make him a reliable starter,» noted Sean Barnard of DraftKings. «Though there have been challenges when matched on the perimeter, his competitiveness continues to showcase his potential.»
Memphis faces significant upcoming challenges, matching up against powerhouse centers Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets and Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers across three games. These encounters could serve as a benchmark for Edey’s development, especially given the historical struggles Memphis experienced against Jokic last season in Steven Adams‘s absence.
«It’s what you want as a competitor,» Edey expressed regarding the forthcoming high-profile games. «I get to see where I stand.» Memphis guard Marcus Smart added, «He’s going to get some real-life experience. It’s going to be a good test for him.»
Edey’s playtime has been incrementally increasing as his performance improves, recently averaging over 21 minutes in the past four games and scoring double figures consecutively. However, his fouling frequency has been an issue, rising to 5.7 fouls per 36 minutes compared to his collegiate average of 2.4 fouls per 40 minutes at Purdue.
The upcoming games against Jokic and Embiid, both known for drawing fouls, may challenge Edey to refine his defensive discipline, an aspect he improved significantly during his college tenure.
The season continues to be a learning curve for Edey, a Grizzlies team member adapting to the rigors of NBA competition. «I feel like game by game it’s getting better,» Edey said, highlighting his growing understanding of the game’s pace and nuances.
For the Grizzlies, Edey’s ongoing performance will be pivotal as they aim to contend with some of the league’s most dominant forces.
