Michigan Wolverines Defeat Fresno State Bulldogs in Season Opener
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – In an impressive display of defensive prowess, the Michigan Wolverines triumphed over the Fresno State Bulldogs with a score of 30-10 in their season opener.
The Wolverines extended their remarkable winning streak in regular-season games to 16 consecutive victories. Prior to the game, much of the media attention centered on the starting quarterback position, but it quickly became apparent that the focus should have been on the Bulldogs’ ability to handle Michigan’s formidable defense.
Throughout the match, Fresno State was limited to a mere 247 total yards, managing only nine rushing yards. Key contributions came from standout defensive players, including an edge rusher with impressive stats of five total tackles, two sacks, and three tackles for loss. Others included a defensive back and a defensive lineman, each finishing with significant contributions to team defense.
Highlighting the game was a late interception returned for a touchdown by a likely future top-10 NFL draft pick, which sealed the victory for Michigan. The Wolverines began the game with an interception by defensive back Zeke Berry, marking the first interception of his career, which placed the offense in a favorable scoring position.
Quarterback Alex Orji was pivotal in executing a goalline package, successfully connecting with running back for the team’s initial touchdown. As the fourth quarter approached, the Wolverines extended their lead when new starting quarterback Davis Warren led a lengthy drive that finished with a touchdown pass to tight end.
Warren, who completed 18 of 25 passes for 118 yards, faced scrutiny from fans as the offense struggled early on. The receiving corps generated just 33 yards, reinforcing concerns about offensive performance despite Warren’s effective leadership.
This game marked a challenging start for the defending national champions, but Warren’s journey to the starting position deserves recognition. A cancer survivor diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2019, Warren’s determination led him from a walk-on status to securing the starting role.
Michigan’s 119-23-3 overall record in season openers showcases its historical success, and the team looks to improve with the Texas Longhorns next on the schedule.
