Research from motoring experts RAC and transport analytics specialists INRIX indicates that over 16 million drivers are anticipated to hit the roads during the upcoming early May bank holiday weekend. This figure is significantly higher than the pre-COVID levels, signifying a surge in travel activity.

The influx of getaway traffic is forecasted to commence on Friday, with a peak expected on Saturday, where around 3.3 million journeys are projected to take place. Subsequently, on Sunday and Monday, a further 2.3 million and 2.6 million separate trips are planned, respectively.

INRIX has provided guidance for drivers to avoid specific hours to lessen traffic congestion. For instance, it is advised not to begin journeys between 1pm and 7pm on Thursday and to plan trips before 9am and after 5pm throughout the weekend.

According to RAC, Friday is earmarked as the day likely to experience the worst traffic delays, with major routes expected to be 13% slower than usual. Moreover, the transition from the weekend to the working week could see disruptions on the road, particularly for returning traffic from various regions.

INRIX data highlights that certain routes, such as the M53 from Liverpool to Chester and the M5 between Bristol and Taunton, are prone to significant delays due to the amalgamation of getaway and commuter traffic. Southbound routes like the M55, A30, A38, and A11 are anticipated to witness heavy congestion during the early May bank holiday weekend.

RAC Breakdown spokesperson, Alice Simpson, emphasized the importance of advanced planning for travellers undertaking longer journeys during this period. With the looming train strikes in the following week, roads are expected to be busier, urging drivers to strategize their travel schedules wisely to counter potential disruptions.
