Minnesota State Senator Charged with Burglary After Incident at Family Member’s Home
A Minnesota state senator, Nicole Mitchell, has been charged with first-degree burglary after an incident at a family member’s home in Detroit Lakes.
The charges were filed by the Becker County Attorney’s Office following an early morning burglary in progress at a residence off Granger Road and Long Avenue.
Responding officers found Mitchell inside the home, where she was taken into custody.
In a statement on her state senator’s Facebook page, Mitchell denied the allegations, stating that she entered the home out of concern for a family member who was ailing.
Mitchell’s attorney confirmed that he advised her not to resign amid the allegations.
The incident involved Mitchell allegedly breaking into her stepmother’s home, during which she was found in the basement by officers.
Upon arrest, Mitchell was found in black clothing with a backpack containing items such as laptops, a cellphone, and identifying documents.
During her arrest, Mitchell mentioned that she was trying to retrieve sentimental items belonging to her late father.
Mitchell appeared in court and was released with conditions pending further court hearings scheduled for June.
Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy expressed her concerns over the allegations against Mitchell, acknowledging the need for due process.
Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson, on the other hand, called for Mitchell’s resignation due to the nature of the alleged actions.
Nicole Mitchell, a former TV meteorologist and commander with the Air National Guard, is in the midst of her first term as a state senator.
