Minnesota Vikings Strategize T.J. Hockenson’s Return Amidst Injury Concerns
As the Minnesota Vikings continue to strategize on the field, the management of star tight end T.J. Hockenson‘s return has become a focal point. After recovering from a torn ACL, Hockenson has been gradually reintegrated into the lineup, demonstrating patience and strategic planning by the team to maximize his impact.
In recent games, Hockenson’s involvement in the offense has increased steadily, reflecting the team’s cautious approach. For instance, during the Week 9 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, he participated in 33 offensive plays, accounting for 45% of the snaps. The following week, against the Jacksonville Jaguars, his participation rose to 39 snaps, equivalent to 46% of the offensive plays. In a win against the Tennessee Titans in Week 11, Hockenson saw a similar level of action with 35 snaps, or 48% of the playtime.
This incremental approach is partly due to Hockenson’s recovery process, as well as the rise of fellow tight end Josh Oliver, who has been a significant contributor in both the running and passing games. «We kind of had a plan to get back into it smoothly,» Hockenson commented, expressing optimism about increased involvement in the coming games.
Hockenson’s role on the team is expected to expand when the Vikings face the Chicago Bears, as Oliver is recovering from an ankle injury that may sideline him. Vikings’ head coach Kevin O'Connell emphasized the importance of timing Hockenson’s participation to ensure he makes the best impact. «He’s getting better and better,» O’Connell noted, «We’re very fortunate to have him back in there.»
Despite not having reached the end zone yet, Hockenson has accumulated a respectable 13 receptions for 112 yards since his return, providing a dependable option for quarterback Sam Darnold. «He’s a great football player,» Darnold stated. «I’m happy to have him back.» This sentiment is shared by star wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who believes Hockenson’s increasing workload will reduce the defensive pressure focused on himself.
With Oliver potentially unavailable, Hockenson is poised to take on a larger role against Chicago. The Vikings may also look to fill the void left by Oliver with veteran tight end Robert Tonyan, who is on the practice squad, or consider activating Nick Muse from injured reserve. As Hockenson continues to adapt, his experience against NFC North rivals, including the Bears, will be valuable.
In his previous appearances against the Bears, Hockenson has averaged 4.2 catches and 47.8 yards per game. Although scoring a touchdown in Soldier Field has eluded him, he remains a critical player for the Vikings’ offensive strategy heading into Sunday’s matchup.
