Minshew Named Raiders Starting Quarterback
Gardner Minshew has officially been named the starting quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, a decision announced by head coach Antonio Pierce on Sunday.
Minshew, who joined the Raiders this offseason as a free agent, beat out second-year quarterback O'Connell for the top spot in a closely contested competition.
Coach Pierce stated that a variety of factors influenced their choice, but ultimately, they believe that Minshew provides the best chance for a strong start to the season.
“His experience and what we’ve seen in practice were two big factors,” Pierce explained. “We feel like Gardner gives us the best opportunity to get off to a fast start.”
Minshew recently signed a two-year, $25 million contract with the Raiders, including $15 million guaranteed. In two preseason games, he threw for 212 yards and scored one touchdown.
O’Connell, the former starter, also performed well in the preseason, completing 21 of 29 passes, totaling 172 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
After the Raiders’ last preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys, Minshew expressed optimism about the upcoming season, saying he was excited about what the team can achieve together.
Pierce noted that the bond between Minshew and O’Connell has been strong throughout the competition. He highlighted Minshew’s leadership qualities and how his presence has positively impacted the team.
This will mark the sixth consecutive season that Minshew has started at least one game. He has previously played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, and Indianapolis Colts. Now, he’s ready to bring Minshew Mania to Las Vegas.
