In a heartbreaking turn of events at the Paris Olympics 2024, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu missed out on a medal, finishing fourth in the women’s 49kg category. She lifted a total of 199kg, consisting of 88kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk, just one kilogram shy of an Olympic medal.

It wasn’t just a tough day for Chanu; the Indian contingent had a series of disappointments. Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from her highly anticipated wrestling match in the 50kg final because she weighed 100 grams over her weight category, losing the medal she thought she had secured.

Antim Panghal also faced a tough matchup, as she lost in the Round of 16 in women’s 53kg wrestling against Turkey’s Zeynet Yetgil. Additionally, the women’s table tennis team exited the competition after a 1-3 defeat to Germany in the quarterfinals.

Mirabai Chanu, who had previously won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, came into this competition strong after recovering from a hip injury. Despite her impressive achievements, including gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and World Championships, this outing was not quite as rewarding.
