MLB Cy Young Award Winners Announcement Expected Amid Anticipation
The prestigious Cy Young Awards, recognizing the best pitchers in Major League Baseball, are set to be announced on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. ET on MLB Network. This year’s ceremony will shine a spotlight on a pair of outstanding left-handers, marking another milestone in their notable careers.
Among the frontrunners for the American League’s Cy Young Award is Tarik Skubal, who celebrates his 28th birthday coinciding with the awards night. Skubal has been pivotal for the Detroit Tigers this season, registering a remarkable 228 strikeouts across 192 innings. His impressive performance led the American League in ERA with 2.39 and fielding independent pitching at 2.70, matching with 18 wins—levels not achieved by a Tigers’ pitcher since Max Scherzer in 2013. The other finalists in the category are Cleveland Guardians‘ closer Emmanuel Clase and Kansas City Royals‘ right-hander Seth Lugo.
The National League’s race is projected to be more competitive. Chris Sale, having been a consistent contender for the award over multiple years, is up against formidable counterparts. Sale’s season was highlighted by leading the league with an ERA of 2.38 and topping the majors in strikeouts with 225. However, Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler poses a significant challenge with a 2.57 ERA over 200 innings and a leading WHIP of 0.96, which demonstrates his dominance in the league. Also in the running is Paul Skenes from the Pittsburgh Pirates, making the competition fierce.
Sale has historically finished between second and sixth in the Cy Young voting from 2012 through 2018, having been the runner-up to Corey Kluber in 2017. His inclusion in the current lineup of nominees continues to reflect his extensive career achievements.
The event promises to deliver excitement as the Baseball Writers' Association of America unveils the results of their balloting. Fans and analysts alike will be tuning into the MLB Network to witness which pitchers set themselves apart in this highly competitive season.
