Mpox Cases Rise in South Africa and Africa
The Department of Health in South Africa confirmed that the mpox outbreak is still being monitored closely, with a total of 24 cases reported in the country. These cases include three deaths and 19 recoveries.
According to the health department, 12 cases were recorded in Gauteng, 11 in KwaZulu-Natal, and one in the Western Cape. They emphasized the importance of not getting complacent, especially after learning lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite no new cases announced recently, the department warned that viruses can be unpredictable. They are ready to respond promptly in case of a surge or new strains.
President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed concern over the rapid spread of mpox across the continent, where more than 17,000 cases have been reported, mainly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The situation seems critical as cases have surged by 160% in 2024 compared to the previous year, raising alarms across 16 countries, including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda.
In Sweden, a patient has contracted a more severe variant of mpox after traveling to Africa, while Pakistan reported its first case recently. South Africa is also experiencing cases, though the strain here is reportedly less lethal.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is working to ensure swift vaccine access and control measures against the virus. Health officials in South Africa are advising the public to focus on prevention, urging them to maintain good hygiene practices.
Overall, this outbreak shows that mpox is not just an isolated issue but a serious health concern that requires awareness and action from the public and governments alike.
