MTN Foundation, NDLEA, UNODC Collaborate to Combat Substance Abuse Among Nigerian Youths
MTN Foundation, NDLEA, and UNODC joined forces in a collaborative effort to address substance abuse among Nigerian youths. The multi-stakeholder conference held in Abuja brought together key government officials and experts to discuss evidence-based strategies against drug abuse.
The event was a follow-up to the recent ASAP stakeholder conference organized by MTN Foundation in Lagos. Notably, the initiative has engaged 86,400 students and 1,440 teachers from 144 public secondary schools across 12 states.
The conference emphasized the need for a united approach in the fight against drug abuse, a sentiment echoed by Senator George Akume, representing the Federal Government. He commended the ongoing initiatives for their impact and underscored the administration’s support.
Prince Julius Adelusi Adeluyi, Chairman of MTN Foundation, reiterated the foundation’s dedication to reducing the rate of first-time substance abuse among young Nigerians. He emphasized the significance of collective action in addressing the issue.
Brig Gen Mohammed Buba Marwa, Chairman of NDLEA, called for substantial investments in preventive measures and early detection. He highlighted the Drug Integrity Test initiative, aimed at establishing an anti-drug culture in Nigeria.
Dr. Oliver Stolpe, outgoing UNODC Country Representative, emphasized the importance of evidence-based prevention programs and community involvement in combating drug abuse issues.
The event, which took place at the State House in Abuja, underscored the importance of grassroots initiatives and tailored interventions to meet specific community needs. It highlighted the positive impact of fostering community ownership and responsibility in the fight against substance abuse.
