Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute to Conduct Free Children’s Screening Camp on International Workers’ Day
The Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) in Dar es Salaam is gearing up to host a special free screening camp for children with injuries and birth defects in commemoration of the International Workers’ Day this Wednesday. The initiative, spearheaded by Dr. Anthony Assey, the institute’s director of orthopaedic surgery, aims to provide essential care to young individuals in need.
Dr. Bryson Mcharo, the orthopaedic surgery manager at the children’s department, emphasized the importance of the event in reaching out to the local community. He encouraged parents and guardians to bring children facing bone and joint issues, such as ankle problems, untreated injuries, and hip complications, for thorough examination and treatment at the medical facility.
Further, Dr. Emanuel Lema, a general surgeon at MOI, highlighted preventative measures that can help mitigate disabilities in children. He stressed the significance of maternal nutrition, including the intake of folic acid during pregnancy. Dr. Lema advised women to maintain a balanced diet, particularly focusing on folic acid intake for at least three months post-conception to reduce the risk of birth defects like foot and ankle problems and spinal bifida.
