Mumbai Grapples with Heavy Rains: Thane Waterlogged, High Tide Warning Issued
Heavy showers pummeled Mumbai and its suburbs over the past 24 hours, causing considerable disruption and widespread waterlogging. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a reduction in the rain intensity for July 14, providing some respite to the city.
The Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) issued a ‘yellow’ alert for Mumbai and Palghar, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in some areas.
Meanwhile, a ‘red’ alert has been issued for four districts in Maharashtra – Satara, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, and Ratnagiri – anticipating very heavy rainfall on Sunday. In addition, an ‘orange’ alert is in place for Thane, Raigad, and Pune.
During the heavy rains on Saturday, parts of Mumbai witnessed severe waterlogging, leading to the temporary closure of Andheri Subway. Areas around Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were left inundated due to the downpour.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a ‘high tide’ warning of 3.52 meters at 5:14 pm, cautioning residents to be prepared for possible flooding in low-lying areas.
Residential localities in Bhiwandi, Thane, were among the areas affected by incessant rainfall, exacerbating the waterlogging situation in the region.
The IMD has indicated the likelihood of wet spells extending until July 19, with temperatures expected to remain between 24 and 29 degrees Celsius during this period.
Central Railway was forced to reschedule the departure of the LTT-GKP GODAN EXPRESS train (number 11055) amidst the adverse weather conditions, causing travel delays.
Budget airline IndiGo reported flight disruptions and urged passengers to check their flight statuses due to air traffic congestion triggered by heavy rains in Mumbai.
