Nationalist Congress Party’s Stand on Rebel MLAs in Maharashtra Elections
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra is facing a critical juncture as the state gears up for the upcoming Assembly elections. The party, led by veteran politician Sharad Pawar, is evaluating its position on rebel MLAs who had sided with Ajit Pawar during a split last year.
Speaking to the press, NCP spokesperson Umesh Patil expressed the party’s view that Sharad Pawar is now seeking leaders to contest on the NCP ticket due to a shortage of MLAs. This statement comes in response to remarks made by Rohit Pawar regarding MLAs’ potential rejoining of the NCP.
In the 2019 Assembly elections, NCP secured 54 seats. However, in 2023, the party split, with 41 MLAs, including Ajit Pawar, joining forces with the BJP. The Election Commission‘s decision favored Ajit Pawar, allowing him to retain the party name and symbol.
Patil mentioned that NCP’s strategy for the upcoming elections will depend on survey outcomes and the performance of individual MLAs over the past five years. The party may field all 41 MLAs or opt for strategic replacements based on survey data.
Amid discussions about welcoming back rebel MLAs, Jayant Patil of Maharashtra NCP indicated a potential influx of leaders seeking to return to the party fold. However, Sunil Tatkare, president of the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar, reaffirmed that the party remains united.
Recent developments include Suryakanta Patil‘s return to the NCP from the BJP, adding another dynamic to the political landscape ahead of the elections. Patil’s re-induction signals potential shifts in Maharashtra’s political landscape and the NCP’s positioning.
