NBA Teams Off to Unexpectedly Strong Starts This Season
The NBA season, though still in its early stages, is beginning to show which teams might exceed pre-season expectations. As the season approaches the 20-game mark, a critical point where trends start to solidify, several teams have surprised analysts and fans alike with their strong performance.
One such team is the Cleveland Cavaliers, who have started the season with an unblemished 15-0 record. Under the guidance of new head coach Kenny Atkinson, the Cavaliers have been playing cohesive basketball with an emphasis on spacing and cutting. This strategy has allowed key players such as Jarrett Allen, Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, and Donovan Mitchell to excel, making the Cavs a formidable contender in the Eastern Conference.
The Detroit Pistons, historically struggling in past seasons, are also showing signs of improvement. After a disappointing 14-win campaign last year, changes in management and coaching, with Trajan Langdon as the General Manager and J.B. Bickerstaff as head coach, are paying off. Young talents like Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey are developing well, and the team has seen significant gains, particularly in defensive efficiency, moving up to sixth in the league.
The Los Angeles Lakers have also had a promising start with a 9-4 record. The team’s success is partly attributed to the strong performances of superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis, along with better three-point shooting and strategic lineups initiated by new head coach J.J. Redick. However, concerns about their perimeter defense remain, but the Lakers hope to maintain their offensive momentum.
In the Western Conference, the Houston Rockets have made a noteworthy jump, progressing from a 22-win to a 41-win team under coach Ime Udoka last season. Despite a lack of a traditional rim protector, the Rockets’ defense is thriving with players like Tari Eason and Amen Thompson providing energy and athleticism off the bench.
Finally, the Golden State Warriors have revamped their roster with new additions like Buddy Hield, Kyle Anderson, and De’Anthony Melton. This retooling has fortified both their defense and depth, key components of their success during their dynastic years. With Stephen Curry leading the way, the Warriors remain a threat in the competitive Western Conference.
