Nebraska Football Faces Challenges Amid NCAA Roster Cap

Nebraska Memorial Stadium Senior Day

As Nebraska football prepares for its final home game of the season, attention turns to the significant roster challenges posed by looming NCAA regulations. This Saturday, around 30 seniors will don the Cornhuskers’ colors for the last time at Memorial Stadium. Yet, several underclassmen face uncertain futures due to changes that may force them to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Recent decisions will reduce the NCAA roster limit to 105 players, compelling universities like Nebraska, which maintains a larger pool of approximately 150, to make difficult choices. Head Coach Matt Rhule addressed these impending challenges at a Monday press conference, highlighting the impact not only on players but also on the essence of Nebraska’s storied walk-on program.

«I can’t imagine what’s going to happen in the next six months. If you’re a coach who really cares about people, you’re going to have to tell guys at the end of the season, ‘there’s no spot for you here next year,’» Rhule remarked with concern.

Among those likely affected are Marques Buford Jr. and Jimari Butler, notable players who wish to continue their careers at Nebraska. Buford, who redshirted in 2023, is now in his fourth year, while Butler, benefitting from the COVID season and a redshirt year, is in his fifth.

Rhule contemplates the impact on player development, which forms the bedrock of Nebraska’s football ethos. «When Ted Carter and Trev Alberts offered me this job, they said to me, ‘we want you to build a program built on player development.’ That was the ethos of Nebraska,» he shared.

One standout story is of linebacker Grant Buda, a 3.9 GPA student and future doctor, illustrating the broader significance of walk-on programs. «Grant made his way into camp because of the work he did this summer. He’s going to be a doctor,» noted Rhule, who sees such scenarios becoming less feasible under new rules.

Despite the NCAA changes, Rhule remains committed to honoring those players who have made considerable sacrifices. This sentiment resonates as Nebraska prepares to face Wisconsin in their final home clash of the season, a match set for broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

Rhule’s message is clear—each of the players, whether walk-on or scholarship, remains a Husker for life. «For me, this is one of the biggest weeks of my coaching career. I want to honor all those kids,» he stated passionately.
