Foreign Minister S Jaishankar recalled Jawaharlal Nehru‘s significant remarks made about India’s perspective on China‘s rise during a discussion at the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Ahmedabad.

Discussing India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council, Jaishankar highlighted the pivotal role played by Nehru in shifting the focus towards China’s early ascendancy.

Previously, in 1950, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had warned about India facing challenges from China, emphasizing Nehru’s need to pay attention to the latter’s growing influence.

Jaishankar mentioned the Himalayan issue and the impossibility of countering China’s aggression from that front, emphasizing the necessity for strategic planning to address such concerns. He revealed that discussions took place on securing India’s permanent membership in the UN, putting China ahead, as Nehru had envisioned.

Jaishankar highlighted how Nehru had voiced different opinions, urging vigilance when dealing with the Chinese, considering their intentions may not always be favorable. Pointing to current affairs, Jaishankar underlined the need for India to prioritize its own interests. The concept of giving China priority in the UN had influenced today’s ongoing dialogue, he shared.

Stating that previous decisions had faced criticism and were now being rectified, Jaishankar cited Sardar Patel’s unwillingness to compromise on certain boundaries for Jammu and Kashmir as a reflection of the BJP-led central government’s efforts to resolve past disputes.
