Nelson Asofa-Solomona Celebrates 200th NRL Game and Life Membership with Melbourne Storm
Nelson Asofa-Solomona recently marked a significant milestone in his rugby league career, playing his 200th NRL game with the Melbourne Storm during a match against the Dolphins. The Storm emerged victorious with a score of 48-6, securing the 2024 minor premiership following the Panthers’ loss to the Raiders.
Asofa-Solomona’s journey in first-grade rugby began in 2015, and since then, he has become an integral member of Melbourne’s forward pack, guided by coach Craig Bellamy.
Amidst the celebrations, Asofa-Solomona shared a memorable experience related to his new status as a life member of the Storm. Prior to the milestone game, he was summoned to the office of Frank Ponissi, the general manager of football. This unexpected invitation made him reflect on any potential mistakes he had made, leading to a moment of anxiety.
Upon entering the office, Ponissi reassured him by stating, ‘mate, sit down, nothing to worry about,’ before revealing the life membership announcement. Asofa-Solomona described feeling overwhelmed and shocked by the honors bestowed upon him.
This prestigious recognition was celebrated alongside teammates Christian Welch and Cameron Munster, as well as staff member Ashley Tucker, who were all inducted the same night.
Despite rumors regarding a rift with Coach Bellamy circulating in the media, Asofa-Solomona expressed his enjoyment of the competitive atmosphere. He reaffirmed his commitment to the Storm by signing a new contract in 2023, which will see him remain with the team until the end of 2028.
The prop also took a moment to acknowledge former teammates Jesse and Kenny Bromwich, now playing for the Dolphins, expressing gratitude for their mentorship and support throughout his career.
Reflecting on the minor premiership, Asofa-Solomona stated, ‘It’s good but we want the other one,’ signaling the team’s aspirations for further success in the upcoming finals.
