The New England Revolution has secured initial backing for the construction of a soccer stadium in Everett, Massachusetts. However, the path forward requires addressing numerous issues, including financial feasibility for the Kraft Group, the owners of the Revolution. Allocating up to $500 million for a new but smaller stadium—compared to their current home at Gillette Stadium shared with the New England Patriots—poses a significant consideration.

«We really need to get into it before we understand,» noted team president Brian Bilello in a discussion with the Boston Globe. Beyond ticket sales, the stadium’s potential to increase the team’s relevance and fan base in Greater Boston is crucial for driving revenues through other channels.

The Revolution, despite a challenging season with only nine wins in 34 Major League Soccer (MLS) games, boasted a record-breaking average attendance of 29,262 in Foxborough, marking the third-highest in the league. The attendance figures contribute to the urgency of the plan, especially as soccer’s popularity grows in North America, catalyzed by the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

Design plans for the proposed stadium are not finalized, but Bilello indicated a seating capacity of 22,000 to 24,000, less than previously reported figures. The earliest the stadium could open is 2027. Ticket price fluctuations and operational costs are anticipated alongside a strategic focus on fortifying a passionate fan base.

Naming rights, signage contracts, and future jersey sponsorships are potential revenue streams. The example of other MLS teams like the Columbus Crew in downtown Columbus demonstrates how an urban venue can create excitement and attract opportunities. «It’s giving our fans [a] more authentic experience,» commented Bilello.

The legislative move to repurpose a 43-acre site on the Mystic River is a pivotal step in the stadium’s construction. The site’s transformation aligns with Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria’s vision of converting industrial land for entertainment purposes, enhancing the area’s infrastructure and economic landscape.

Governor Maura Healey signed a comprehensive $4 billion economic development bill, which supports various sectors including the life sciences and artificial intelligence industries. It also introduces controversial rules around the resale of event tickets. Consumer groups, such as the Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group, have expressed concern over potential monopolistic practices by ticket sellers like Live Nation Entertainment.

Provisions within the new law ensure ticket prices are transparent online and prohibit the use of automated ticket-buying bots, aligning with consumer protection objectives. These legislative developments, paired with impending logistical challenges, signal the long road ahead for the New England Revolution’s stadium project.
