New York Giants Tommy Devito

The New York Giants have announced a significant change in their quarterback lineup as second-year player Tommy DeVito is set to replace Daniel Jones as the starting quarterback. This decision, revealed by head coach Brian Daboll, comes as the Giants face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home this Sunday.

The Giants have endured a challenging season, holding a 2-8 record and having lost their last five games. Despite these struggles, the team has averaged only 15.6 points per game, the lowest in the NFL. These disappointing results have prompted coaching staff and management to seek changes during their recent bye week.

«Those are never easy conversations,» Daboll stated, highlighting the difficulty of making this decision. «We’ve been around Tommy last year where he created a little bit of a spark for us, which is the reason why we’re going with Tommy,» he added. The move also sees Drew Lock becoming the backup, while Daniel Jones will be inactive for the upcoming game.

Tommy DeVito’s elevation to starter is notable, considering he had not played a single down this season prior to the announcement. Daboll expressed confidence in DeVito’s capabilities, reflecting on his performances from last year. «We’ve been with Tommy here for a little bit. He’s done a nice job, I would say, throughout practices here,» said Daboll.

DeVito had made a name for himself previously as a local success story. An undrafted rookie, he managed to excite fans and his team during his stint as a starter, including a remarkable performance against Washington where he threw three touchdown passes.

Daniel Jones, originally the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, has had a mixed tenure with the Giants. Injury issues, including a neck problem and a torn ACL, have hampered his ability to consistently lead the team. This season, Jones has thrown eight touchdown passes and seven interceptions across 10 games.

Daboll remarked on the overall performance issues affecting the team, suggesting that changes are needed to spark improvements. «We’re obviously not playing the way any of us want to play, and that’s on all of us,» he said. «We have a lot of football in front of us. I think we all need to be committed to doing everything we can do to close out the season the right way,» Daboll concluded, emphasizing the need for a fresh outlook as the season progresses.
