For frequent travelers between Canada and the United States, changes are on the horizon as the Nexus trusted-traveler program’s application fee is set to increase. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced that the current fee, established more than two decades ago, has become insufficient in covering the evolving program’s expenses.

The impending fee hike, scheduled to come into effect on October 1, aims to align the fee structure more closely with the actual cost of managing the Nexus program. This adjustment is envisioned to support future enhancements, including technological advancements and infrastructure upgrades. Both agencies stress the importance of these changes to keep pace with program demands and to further refine the Nexus program.

Designed to expedite border crossings for pre-screened travelers, the Nexus program streamlines the process and allows border officers to concentrate efforts on critical tasks such as preventing unlawful activities and identifying criminal behavior.

Following the initial closure of Nexus enrollment facilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a substantial backlog in applications emerged. The program’s resumption led to a significant uptick in applications, as evidenced by the enrollment of over 1.8 million members to date.

In light of these changes, the Nexus application fee will increase from its current level of US$50 to US$120 starting October 1. This adjustment, designed to adequately cover operational expenses and future improvements, translates to an annual cost of US$24 over the five-year membership term.

Applicants who have already submitted their applications and paid the previous fee will be exempted from the increased fee if they complete their enrollment interviews before the deadline. Recognizing the anticipated surge in applications prior to October, the CBSA and U.S. CBP are prepared to accommodate the growing demand, urging applicants to schedule their interviews promptly through the Nexus enrollment centers.

As both agencies work towards regulatory approvals for the fee modification, applicants are encouraged to stay informed and take advantage of the available appointment slots. With the Nexus program playing a crucial role in expediting border processes, the fee increase is deemed necessary to sustain the program’s efficacy and address ongoing operational needs.
