NFL’s First Ever Thursday Night Flex Game Disrupts Denver Broncos Fans’ Plans
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — In an unprecedented move, the NFL has decided to flex the Denver Broncos‘ week 16 game against the Los Angeles Chargers from a Sunday afternoon to a Thursday night, causing a stir among fans and travelers. This marks the first time in history that an NFL game has been shifted to a Thursday night slot.
Many fans, including Greg Wellesley, a teacher from Quist Middle School in Thornton, found themselves scrambling to adjust their plans. Wellesley, who resides in Commerce City, had planned to travel to Los Angeles for the game. «We actually looked at the schedule this week and made an anticipation we might have a flex this week,» he remarked. «I was thinking Sunday night football because I didn’t even know it was possible to move to Thursday night.»
Despite the change being announced four weeks in advance by the NFL with the intention of giving fans ample time to reschedule, Wellesley admits it has been a costly adjustment. Originally, he had arranged for a Friday night departure on a 10 p.m. flight, allowing him to attend the game without missing work. «Unfortunately, the flex kind of threw those plans out,» he lamented.
The Broncos have reportedly welcomed the schedule change, although it comes after a previous Thursday night road game against New Orleans during week 7. Nevertheless, Wellesley remains optimistic about attending. «We were able to do okay with it but we definitely didn’t come out financially better because of this decision,» he acknowledged, adding, «if we win the game I am going to be thrilled no matter what.»
The originally scheduled Thursday night slot featured an AFC North Division matchup between the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals. Due to both teams’ underwhelming performances this season, the game was replaced, providing the Broncos an opportunity under the primetime spotlight.
Wellesley views the rescheduled game as a chance to showcase the Broncos’ capabilities. «I am going to say the Broncos redeem the season,» he predicted, adding his guess that they would win 20-17 through a last-second field goal.
