NHL Veteran Coach Rick Bowness Retires After 38 Seasons
After an illustrious career spanning 38 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), Rick Bowness, the head coach of the Winnipeg Jets, has announced his retirement from coaching. Hailing from Moncton, NB., Bowness leaves behind a legacy of success with the Jets, leading them to two consecutive Stanley Cup Playoffs appearances.
During the 2023-24 season, the Winnipeg Jets under Bowness set several franchise records, including most road wins, longest winning streak, and an impressive point streak. The team showcased exceptional defensive prowess by going 35 consecutive games allowing three goals or fewer, setting a new record for the franchise.
Recognizing his outstanding contributions, Bowness was named a finalist for the prestigious Jack Adams Award, given to the NHL coach who has made the most significant impact on their team’s success. His coaching career, spanning eight different franchises, saw him achieve 17 playoff appearances and several trips to the finals.
Bowness’ coaching tenure saw him mentor teams like the Vancouver Canucks, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Dallas Stars, where he made a lasting impact. He joins the elite company of coaching legends such as Scotty Bowman and Pat Quinn, having served as a head coach across five different decades, a feat achieved by only a select few in NHL history.
