NHS England Appoints Dr Adrian James as First Medical Director for Mental Health and Neurodiversity
NHS England has announced the appointment of Dr. Adrian James to a groundbreaking role aimed at enhancing services for individuals with mental health needs, autism, learning disabilities, and neurodiversity. Dr. James, the former President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and a prominent figure in the healthcare sector, will assume the position of NHS England’s First Medical Director for Mental Health and Neurodiversity.
During his tenure as President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists from 2020 to 2023, Dr. James steered the college through the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. He spearheaded various quality improvement initiatives focusing on workforce wellbeing, diversity, and inclusivity. Notably, Dr. James played a pivotal role in advocating for individuals with serious mental illnesses and learning disabilities to receive priority access to the Covid-19 vaccine, ensuring their protection during the pandemic.
At the core of Dr. James’ agenda during his presidency was the promotion of parity of esteem, aiming to elevate mental health on par with physical health in the healthcare domain.
