Nick Caserio’s Journey from Patriots to Texans General Manager
For two decades, Nick Caserio worked closely with renowned New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, honing his skills that would pave his path to becoming the general manager of the Houston Texans. Caserio began his career in New England as a 25-year-old personnel assistant in 2001, and in 2021, he left to take over the GM role in Houston.
Belichick, speaking on ESPN’s Monday Night Football ManningCast, praised Caserio, stating, «Nick does a tremendous job, can’t say enough about Nick. He’s just done a wonderful job in terms of evaluating talent. He was up in the press box communicating with Josh McDaniels on the personnel even when he was the personnel director. He’s got a real good understanding of what coaches want and what it takes for a player to come in and fit into a coach’s system.»
Caserio’s career in New England saw him assuming various roles. From starting as a personnel assistant in 2001, he advanced to offensive coaching assistant in 2002, followed by a scout position in 2003. In 2004, he became the director of pro personnel. The departure of former Patriots executive Scott Pioli to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008 led to Caserio’s promotion to the role of director of player personnel. During his tenure, he was Belichick’s right-hand man in front office decisions, a crucial role he maintained for 13 years.
Under his position, Caserio was part of the Patriots team during all six Super Bowl victories. Belichick commended his contributions, saying, «He did a great job for me in so many different capacities for a long time.» With Caserio now in Houston, he has the opportunity to make the final calls, a responsibility that previously rested with Belichick in New England.
Since joining the Texans, Caserio has demonstrated his leadership by hiring and subsequently replacing two head coaches before bringing in DeMeco Ryans for the 2023 season. Ryans collaborates with Caserio on roster and personnel decisions. The efforts in building a team involve key players like C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson, offering a promising future for the franchise. While it doesn’t yet compare to the Patriots’ dynasty, Caserio is working to revitalize a team that has never reached an AFC Championship game.
