Nigerian Police Force to Enforce Digitalized Central Motor Registry for Vehicle Owners
The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has announced plans to enforce the digitalized central motor registry (e-CMR) starting from July 29. The move is aimed at curbing vehicle theft and related crimes across the country. The force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, stated that the e-CMR is a real-time online database of vehicle information, designed to support police investigations and combat crimes such as terrorism, banditry, and armed robbery.
IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who is leading the initiative, emphasized the importance of enhancing national safety and security through the digitalization of the motor vehicle registration system. The e-CMR will serve as a critical tool in verifying vehicle ownership, tracking stolen vehicles, and preventing the purchase of stolen cars by unsuspecting buyers.
Vehicle owners and users are urged to obtain the digitalized CMR certificate online at cmris.npf.gov.ng to comply with the upcoming enforcement. Services such as change of ownership, license number, engine, and chassis/body details will be seamlessly processed through the e-CMR system, ensuring the authenticity of vehicles and enhancing recovery efforts for stolen cars.
Before the full enforcement commences on July 29, the IGP has directed comprehensive publicity campaigns to educate the public on the requirements, processes, and enforcement procedures of the e-CMR. This initiative underscores the commitment of the Nigerian Police Force to leverage technology in enhancing public safety and reducing vehicle-related crimes nationwide.
