On the evening of July 20, 2024, a health emergency emerged in Malappuram district following the diagnosis of a Nipah virus case. A 15-year-old boy hailing from Chembrassery, near Pandikkad, has been hospitalized with severe Nipah symptoms and is currently receiving critical care at a private facility in Kozhikode. He has been placed on ventilator support as health authorities scramble to contain the situation.

This incident has led to the transformation of the pay ward at Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital into an isolation unit specifically designated for Nipah cases. Ten beds have been equipped and medical staff, including doctors and nurses, have been instructed to utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) while attending to patients.

In response to this alarming health scare, Health Minister Veena George visited Malappuram to supervise the initiatives taken to mitigate the spread of the virus. Addressing the media during a press conference, she revealed that both the National Institute of Virology in Pune and state laboratories have confirmed the presence of the Nipah virus.

Health department officials have activated the Nipah protocol in accordance with established health guidelines. As part of the government’s action plan, 25 committees have been formed to facilitate surveillance, patient treatment, and other essential tasks critical for managing the outbreak.

Among the immediate measures taken, three individuals, including the boy’s father, have been placed under quarantine due to their close contact with the patient. In total, 214 individuals are under surveillance, with 60 categorized as high-risk. Health authorities announced that serum samples will be collected for testing from all individuals deemed to be in a high health risk category.

In light of the situation, heightened monitoring is being implemented within a three-kilometer radius around Pandikkad, where restrictions will also be imposed in Pandikkad and Anakkayam panchayats located in Malappuram district. The boy first displayed symptoms of fever on July 10, sought treatment at a private clinic two days later, and was ultimately admitted to a series of hospitals, culminating in his transfer to Kozhikode.

To support ongoing efforts, a 24/7 control room has been established by the Health Department, and concerned individuals can reach them via the dedicated helpline at 0483 2732010. Minister George expressed confidence in the Health Department’s capacity to address the Nipah threat effectively and noted that a monoclonal antibody, essential for treating Nipah, is being procured from a laboratory in Pune, expected to arrive by the next day.

As a precautionary measure, masks and PPE are being distributed to medical institutions in both Kozhikode and Malappuram. The public has been advised to wear masks and remain vigilant in the face of the emerging health crisis. During her visit, Veena George underscored that although the situation is under control, citizens should take necessary precautions to safeguard their health.

An emergency meeting, which took place earlier in the day, brought together key officials including the Additional Chief Secretary, the Director of the National Health Mission, district collectors of both Kozhikode and Malappuram, and medical officers among others. Their collaborative efforts reflect a robust and well-orchestrated response to the looming threat of Nipah.

The Nipah virus first surfaced in Kerala in May 2018, causing widespread concern among communities in Kozhikode. Since then, the state has witnessed four confirmed cases, with the last incident recorded in September 2023. The resurgence of Nipah raises pressing health challenges, underlining the importance of rapid response and comprehensive public health strategies.
