Noah Gray Emerging as Key Player for Kansas City Chiefs
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Noah Gray, a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, is proving to be an unexpected asset this NFL season. In recent games, Gray has showcased his reliability by catching two touchdown passes, marking his first scores of the season. His performance surprised many who may not have considered him as a primary target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes, who demonstrates a strong connection with Gray, expressed confidence in the tight end’s capabilities. «It’s almost always a completion when Mahomes throws to Gray,» reported sources. Gray boasts an impressive catch percentage of 88.5, the highest among NFL players not in the running back position. «He does everything the right way and he’s learned a ton from [Travis Kelce],» Mahomes was quoted saying. «He’s just a guy that’s going to be in the right spot.»
The Chiefs have shown faith in Gray, evident from the contract extension he was awarded just before the season began. His contract, now extended to 2027, suggests the team views him as a potential successor to the veteran Kelce. Although he has only 23 receptions, trailing behind the Chiefs’ leader Kelce’s 62, Gray’s contribution is not overlooked.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid has praised Gray for his versatility. «He’s a good football player and he does a lot for us,» Reid commented. Gray’s role extends beyond just being a receiving tight end as he is heavily involved in special teams – a testament to his utility. This season, Kansas City has run the most plays with two tight ends on the field in the NFL.
Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy highlighted Gray’s adaptability as a critical factor. «I think that stands him apart from a lot of guys in this league,» Nagy said. His ability to run routes effectively and block when necessary adds significant depth to the team.
Gray’s journey began when he was selected in the 2021 NFL Draft from Duke, where his skill set began to develop. «Duke was a lot of fun and the NFL was a completely different game,» Gray shared about his transition to the professional league. Initially, his role was more limited, but he has gradually assumed greater responsibilities within the Chiefs’ offense.
Despite not being projected to replicate Kelce’s prolific receiving numbers, Gray has been praised for his «smart and physical» playstyle. Mahomes noted, «He’s one of those guys that can come in for Travis in spots and I have full confidence in him.» The Chiefs are clearly satisfied with his current trajectory and the potential he holds for the future.
