NYC Housing Authority Reopens Section 8 Waiting List After 15 Years
The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) has officially reopened the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program waiting list after a hiatus of nearly 15 years. This move, announced by NYC Mayor Eric Adams and Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer, aims to provide housing assistance to more low-income families in need.
The application window for the Section 8 waiting list opened at midnight on June 3 and will close at 11:59 PM on June 9, 2024. NYCHA is set to randomly select 200,000 applications by lottery to join the new waitlist, with the final list expected to be established by August 1, 2024.
Section 8 HCV is a federally funded program administered by NYCHA that offers rental subsidies for eligible low-income families to rent housing in the private market. With the reopening of the waiting list, more New Yorkers will have the opportunity to access affordable housing options.
NYCHA currently oversees the largest Section 8 program in the country, supporting 241,117 residents with housing subsidies. The decision to reopen the Section 8 waitlist underscores NYCHA’s commitment to addressing the city’s housing crisis and improving the lives of its tenants.
Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer emphasized the significance of making the Section 8 subsidy available to a wider range of New Yorkers, highlighting NYCHA’s dedication to enhancing housing accessibility and affordability in the city.
