Oilers Trade Ceci for Emberson
In a surprising move, the Edmonton Oilers have traded defenceman Cody Ceci along with a 2025 third-round draft pick to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for the younger defender Ty Emberson. This deal comes as the Oilers look to shake things up a bit ahead of the next season.
Ceci has had a solid three years with the Oilers, scoring five goals and adding 20 assists in last season’s run. He also contributed during the playoffs, netting two goals and three assists in 24 games. However, at 30 years old and with a $3.25 million contract for one more year, his departure may signal the team’s shift towards a younger lineup.
On the other hand, Ty Emberson, at just 24 years old, is seen as a promising asset. He played 30 games last season for the Sharks, scoring one goal and providing nine assists. Emberson was originally drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in 2018 and has a background with the U.S. National Team Development Program.
Earlier on the same day, the Oilers also made headlines by acquiring forward Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks. They traded a fourth-round draft pick from Ottawa for him, indicating a push to bolster their roster further.
With this trade involving Ceci, the Oilers are likely making financial moves to accommodate a potential offer from the St. Louis Blues for players Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. Ceci’s exit from the team opens up space for other defenders vying for a spot on the roster.
