Oklahoma State Faces Texas Tech Amidst Losing Streak
The Oklahoma State Cowboys, led by Coach Mike Gundy, are preparing to tackle a seven-game losing streak as they host Texas Tech at Boone Pickens Stadium on Saturday. This matchup represents an opportunity for the Cowboys to halt their struggles in conference play.
Oklahoma State’s recent performances have been challenging, with losses to Utah (22-19 on September 21), Kansas State (42-20 on September 28), West Virginia (38-14 on October 5), BYU (38-35 on October 18), Baylor (38-28 on October 26), Arizona State (42-21), and TCU (38-13 on November 9). Throughout this streak, their defense has allowed an average of nearly 500 yards and 31.9 points per game.
On the offensive end, Oklahoma State is considering a shift at quarterback. According to OSU’s radio voice, Dave Hunziker, true freshman Maealiuaki Smith may get the start over Alan Bowman against Texas Tech. Smith has shown promise in limited action, completing 7 of 10 passes for 103 yards with one interception. Hunziker indicated that the starting role is not yet officially decided.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys receive a boost with the return of starting left tackle Dalton Cooper, who has missed several games due to a foot injury. His comeback is timely as Oklahoma State will honor its senior class, with Cooper being one of the 20 players completing their eligibility.
Texas Tech enters the game with a record of 6-4, having suffered a recent loss to Colorado (41-27). Despite this setback, the Red Raiders boast a potent offense led by quarterback Behren Morton and running back Tahj Brooks. Brooks, in particular, is expected to be a significant challenge for the Oklahoma State defense, which has struggled against the run all season.
The matchup will be broadcast on ESPN+ starting at 2:30 p.m. Havoc is expected on both sides, considering Oshields’ recent defensive lapses and Texas Tech’s explosive plays. The game totals are predicted to go over 66 points, as both teams have displayed strong offensive capabilities coupled with defensive vulnerabilities this season.
Sports analyst and OSU insider Scott Wright reports that the Cowboys have had no new injuries during their bye week, and the team remains motivated to end the season on a positive note.
