Olivia Reeves Claims Gold at Paris Olympics
In an exciting display of strength, 21-year-old Olivia Reeves made history by winning a gold medal in women’s weightlifting at the Paris Olympics. This victory marked the first time in 24 years that the U.S. brought home a weightlifting gold, dating back to the Sydney Games in 2000, when women were first allowed to compete in the sport.
Reeves, who studies at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, showcased her impressive skills during the 71kg category. She kicked off her competition with a cautious 112kg lift, ensuring she got on the board. With each attempt, her confidence grew, and she finished the snatch with a new Olympic record of 117kg, or roughly 258 pounds.
As the competition progressed, Reeves looked unbeatable. None of her rivals could match her lifts, which set the stage for her clean & jerk. She opened with a 140kg lift, which she completed successfully, giving her a total score of 257kg. Without the need for more attempts, she surprisingly went for a second lift of 150kg, which she successfully completed, but her attempt at a new Olympic record wasn’t successful.
The competition wasn’t just about winning gold; it was a momentous occasion for U.S. weightlifting. Cara Heads-Slaughter, who competed in the 2000 Olympics, spoke highly of Reeves, suggesting that she could be the best U.S. weightlifter in women’s history.
In the final standings, Mari Leivis Sanchez from Colombia took home the silver with her performance, while Ecuador‘s Angie Paola Palacios secured the bronze. Reeves’ remarkable achievements not only made her a star of the Olympics but also put her in the spotlight for future competitions.
