Ongoing Search for Indian National After Sinkhole Incident in Kuala Lumpur
Authorities in Kuala Lumpur are intensifying efforts to locate Vijaya Lakshmi Gali, an Indian national who fell into a sinkhole on August 23, 2024. According to the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, search and rescue teams are working diligently to uncover possible paths and areas where the missing woman may have been swept away.
Vijaya Lakshmi Gali, aged 48, was on a trip to Malaysia when the incident occurred. Witnesses reported that she was walking toward a temple for breakfast when the ground beneath her suddenly collapsed, causing her to fall into an 8-meter-deep sinkhole.
The search operations, now in their fifth day, involve various local authorities, including the Police, Fire & Rescue Department, Indah Water Consortium, and Federal Territories agencies. The Indian High Commission stated that specialized teams are employing advanced techniques such as high-pressure water jets, remote cameras, and ground penetrating radars to facilitate the search.
In a post shared on social media, the Indian High Commission expressed its commitment to supporting the family of the missing individual. Ongoing efforts are being coordinated closely with relevant local agencies to enhance the search operations.
The incident has raised concerns regarding public safety, particularly in the Dang Wangi area, which experienced a soil slip last year. Local businesses have been advised to close temporarily while safety assessments are conducted.
In an alarming turn of events, a second sinkhole appeared in Jalan Masjid India, approximately 50 meters from the original site, just hours after a storm on August 28. This new collapse has prompted authorities to cordon off the area for public safety.
