Orlando Magic Adjust Roster Amid Caldwell-Pope’s Absence
Orlando Magic guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope will be absent from the team’s Thursday night road game against the Los Angeles Lakers, citing personal reasons. Caldwell-Pope, who has been a consistent starter in all 16 games this season, was listed as out on the Magic’s injury report. His absence presents a challenge for the Magic’s lineup.
During his time on the court, Caldwell-Pope has been a significant contributor to the team, averaging 6.9 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. His defensive prowess, alongside teammate Franz Wagner, has been highlighted by metrics such as Basketball Index‘s D-LEBRON, indicating their status as top individual wing defenders in the NBA this season.
The immediate solution for the Magic comes in the form of Gary Harris, who will make his first start of the season. Harris, who previously made 27 starts in 54 games last season, is known for his marginally above-average defense. Although his scoring has been limited to 3.4 points per game across this season, his familiarity with the Magic’s style makes him a reliable option.
In previous matchups, Harris’s playing time has been restricted during the second game of back-to-back fixtures, posing a potential limitation for Thursday’s game in Los Angeles. Another possibility for the starting lineup includes Anthony Black or Jett Howard, both of whom have shown potential and could offer innovation and scoring ability in the absence of Caldwell-Pope.
As head coach Jamahl Mosley considers his options, he could also turn to Jonathan Isaac, providing a bigger starting unit. Isaac, who brings a formidable defensive presence, could handle increased playmaking duties. However, his prior injury history may cause management to be cautious regarding his minutes.
Though Caldwell-Pope’s absence requires flexible strategies, the Magic will look to consolidate their bench strength by possibly increasing the playtime of guards such as Cole Anthony and Tristan da Silva. Da Silva has already been a regular in the starting lineup, especially with Paolo Banchero sidelined due to a torn right oblique.
In parallel, Wendell Carter Jr. is making steady progress from a left foot plantar fasciitis, practicing in part, although deemed out for the game against the Clippers and facing a similar status versus the Lakers. Banchero, conversing with ESPN‘s Marc J. Spears, hinted at a Christmas comeback, highlighting a cautious yet hopeful recovery from an abdominal injury.
Caldwell-Pope’s experience with the Lakers, where he played 292 games over four seasons and was part of the 2019-20 NBA Championship-winning team in the Orlando bubble, adds context and narrative to his current absence. For Orlando Magic, the game offers an opportunity to test different configurations and continue developing their depth and flexibility.
