Orlando Magic Bounce Back Amid Injuries with Strong Team Effort
The Orlando Magic have successfully navigated a tumultuous period marked by injuries to key players. Following a five-game losing streak after Paolo Banchero‘s injury, the team has rebounded, securing a third-place position in the Eastern Conference with six consecutive wins.
Banchero’s absence placed pressure on Franz Wagner, the team’s second star after securing a max contract extension. Wagner has embraced the challenge, potentially securing a spot in the All-Star game anticipated to take place in San Francisco. Over the past ten games, Wagner has averaged 25.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 5.8 assists, showcasing his growth and importance to the Magic’s success.
Despite Wagner’s standout performances, replacing two starters remains a daunting task. Wendell Carter Jr., the Magic’s starting center, has been out since the game against the Dallas Mavericks, adding to the team’s challenges. Fortunately, Goga Bitadze has stepped up to fill the void in Carter Jr.’s absence. Bitadze, though not known for floor spacing, has contributed significantly with his scoring, defense, and rebounding. In November, he averages 1.7 blocks and 8.6 rebounds per game, including a notable 17-point performance against the Phoenix Suns.
Moreover, Anthony Black has emerged as an essential player amidst the adversity. Initially moving in and out of the rotation, Black has become a crucial playmaker with Banchero sidelined. Over the last ten games, Black has averaged 4.3 assists, second on the team behind Wagner, along with 8.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game. Although still developing, Black’s performance, especially in playmaking, has been pivotal for the Magic.
Black, at just 20 years old, is the youngest member of the roster and is expected to develop further. Despite some ongoing challenges such as turnovers and inconsistent three-point shooting, his visible growth is promising for the Magic’s future. As long as Black maintains his trajectory, he could emerge as a central figure for Orlando moving forward.
