Orlando Magic’s Franz Wagner Signs Record-Breaking Contract Extension
Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner has inked a historic five-year contract extension worth at least $224 million, making it the largest deal in the franchise’s history. The agreement, reached with the NBA moratorium set to end soon, includes potential bonuses that could elevate the total value to around $270 million, based on Wagner’s performance milestones.
Wagner, a standout player from Germany, had a remarkable 2023-24 regular season where he achieved career-high averages of 19.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. Despite a slight dip in his 3-point shooting percentage, Wagner has been a key player for the Magic, showcasing both offensive prowess and defensive skills.
Standing at 6 feet 10 inches and weighing 220 pounds, Wagner has been a reliable presence on the court, missing only a handful of games since his entry into the league in 2021. Notably, he played a crucial role in Germany’s victory at the FIBA World Cup and is set to participate in the upcoming Paris Olympics.
Teamed up with forward Paolo Banchero, Wagner has formed a dynamic duo in Orlando’s frontcourt, contributing significantly to the team’s recent successes. The Magic have seen a substantial improvement in their performance over the past seasons, culminating in a playoff appearance last season where they challenged the Cleveland Cavaliers in a thrilling seven-game series.
Wagner’s contract extension, which commences from the 2025-26 season, secures his presence with the Magic until the 2029-30 season, solidifying Orlando’s promising roster for the foreseeable future. Notably, Wagner’s brother Moe Wagner, who also plays for the Magic, has reportedly agreed to a new two-year deal with the team.
Another notable player from their draft class, guard Jalen Suggs, remains eligible for a contract extension as well, adding further intrigue to Orlando’s future lineup.
