Padres Trade for All-Star Closer Tanner Scott
The San Diego Padres made a big move ahead of the MLB trade deadline, acquiring one of the hottest relievers on the market.
Tanner Scott, a standout closer, was traded in a significant six-player deal that cost the Padres some valuable prospects. Along with Scott, they also brought in reliever Bryan Hoeing.
In return, the Padres had to part ways with top pitching prospect Robby Snelling, right-hander Adam Mazur, and infielders Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears.
Scott has been on fire this season, earning his first All-Star selection. He has posted impressive stats with a 1.18 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 45 2/3 innings. Out of 20 save opportunities, he’s successfully converted 18, proving his reliability on the mound.
With Scott joining the ranks, the Padres now have one of baseball’s best closers already in Robert Suarez, positioning Scott as the main setup man.
Hoeing, who is 27, has experience as both a starter and a reliever. This season, he boasts a 2.70 ERA and has made 16 appearances, showing his versatility on the field.
For the Marlins, the highlight of the deal is definitely Snelling. The young lefty is considered a top-45 prospect, though he has faced some challenges at the Double-A level.
Adam Mazur was also seen as a rising star for the Padres, but he has struggled during his time with the big league team. The other players, Pauley and Beshears, are viewed as high-floor infielders with less upside.
It’s worth noting that Hoeing is under contract until 2029, while Scott will become a free agent after this season, making him a short-term rental for the Padres.
With Scott’s addition, and other options like Suarez, Jeremiah Estrada, and Adrian Morejon already in place, the Padres are setting themselves up for a robust bullpen as they head into the closing stretch of the season.
This trade marks a significant move for the Padres, who had been looking to strengthen their bullpen to address earlier weaknesses.
