The Passing of Praise Poet Jessica Mbangeni at 47
JOHANNESBURG – Bishop Jessica Mbangeni, a revered figure in African heritage and a beloved member of the Xhosa community, has passed away at the age of 47. Known for her vibrant contributions to Xhosa Praise Poetry, music, dance, and African fashion, she was a pivotal founding member of the Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir.
Mbangeni’s family announced her passing, stating that she died in the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg. According to family member Zilungele Mbangeni, her illness was brief; just three weeks prior she had been in Senegal. Earlier this week, she fell ill and sought medical attention, initially appearing to recover before deteriorating once more.
In a statement released by the Mbangeni family, they expressed their profound sorrow and sadness at the loss of their beloved mother, sister, and praised poet. They highlighted her role as a beacon of light and a source of inspiration, noting the immeasurable contributions she made to her community as a praise poet, spiritual leader, and cultural ambassador.
The family has requested privacy during this difficult time as they mourn her loss. They have also expressed their gratitude for the support from friends, fans, and the community but asked for space to grieve collectively.
