Pat McAfee and Colts Linebackers Exchange Remarks Over Podcast Comments
The recent exchange between former Colts punter and current media personality Pat McAfee and Indianapolis Colts linebackers Zaire Franklin and E.J. Speed has captured significant attention within sports media circles. The controversy arose when a clip from Franklin and Speed’s podcast, «The Trenches,» was released with McAfee’s image prominently featured, despite his name not being directly mentioned in the accompanying commentary.
On the podcast, Franklin criticized unnamed media figures for their contradictory takes on national television. «You’re on national television and you’re screaming about changes that need to be made,» Franklin commented. «Then the next week you scream for the opposite change. Use your platform responsibly.» The linebackers aimed their podcast segment at media personalities who, they claim, swing between polar opinions without consistency.
McAfee responded on his show, stating, «They use my picture as if I’m the only human talking about the problems in your locker room.» He referenced internal issues within the Colts organization, citing incidents of players missing treatment and others gambling on the team. «And I’m the problem? OK,» McAfee added.
Further stoking the controversy, McAfee referred to Franklin’s collegiate performance at Syracuse, pointing out the team’s record from 2014-2017. Nevertheless, Franklin has been a standout performer in the NFL, leading the league in tackles with 110 and setting franchise records with the Colts.
The back-and-forth comes at a time when the Colts are facing challenges on the field. With a 5-6 record, they are preparing to face the Detroit Lions, a team boasting a dominant 9-1 record this season. The Colts have not clinched an AFC South title since 2014 and have had only two playoff berths in the interim.
The Lions, under quarterback Jared Goff, have displayed impressive form, outscoring their last three AFC South opponents by a wide margin. Goff’s recent performance included a perfect passer rating, highlighting a formidable offensive threat to the Colts.
In anticipation of the looming matchup, McAfee predicted a decisive victory for the Lions and expressed indifference regarding how his comments might be perceived within the Colts locker room. Meanwhile, the Colts’ defense remains a focal point, leading the league in tackles and seeking to capitalize on their ability to generate turnovers.
The situation underscores ongoing tensions between athletes and media figures, exacerbated by the pressures of professional sports and the scrutiny that accompanies substantial contracts and high expectations.
